Why is Denton the Halloween Capital of Texas?
Denton is the official Halloween Capital of Texas, and that title is written into state law. In 2025, the Texas Legislature unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 86, authored by Representative Richard Hayes and sponsored in the Senate by Senator Tan Parker, formally designating Denton the Halloween Capital of Texas through 2035. The honor recognizes 31 Days of Denton Halloween, the month-long celebration that now draws an estimated one million visitors each October, filling historic downtown Denton with 300+ events, immersive art installations, and themed attractions created by local artists. Denton earned it the way it earns everything, through local makers, local businesses, and a community that goes all in every fall. Come find out why Denton, Texas is home to the largest Halloween celebration in DFW.
Why is Denton home to one of the largest Halloween celebrations in the world?
Denton is the city "North of Ordinary," with a small-town feel and all the fun of a big city. Our eclectic culture is a warm welcome of Southern hospitality mixed with eccentric creativity and an anything-goes attitude. Our "Y'allternative" culture is fueled partly by the two colleges in Denton, the University of North Texas (UNT) and Texas Woman's University (TWU). Dentons two universities are known for producing excellent artistic and musical talent. The ever-evolving student population provides the community with a vibrant nightlife and a constant inflow of new creative talent.
College students aren't the only ones bringing the excitement to town. Denton is home to an active population of residents (Dentonites) who love being involved with their community as much as they love a party. Denton's walkable downtown square, founded in 1857, is home to diverse award-winning restaurants, food trucks on every corner, a well-established brewery scene, a sleepless nightlife, over 50 parks, events every week of the year, and venues for music and arts that cater to every taste (and we mean every taste). No matter how niche, you can find a community in Denton.
We chose to celebrate Halloween all month long to allow our immensely talented community to go all out. Whether it's our local artists creating exciting haunted experiences you can visit, our musicians hosting concerts almost every night of the week, our historians taking you to local haunted spots, our bars and breweries making Halloween-themed drinks, or our community members hosting the most unique Halloween activities in North Texas, you can come to Denton any day in October and expect to experience something you have never seen before. Join us... if you dare.
Who pays for Denton Halloween?
The City's Community Partnership Committee allocates funding for Denton Halloween through the use of Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) dollars, which can only be used to generate tourism. Because the event uses HOT funds rather than a portion of the General Fund, it’s supported by visitors who stay in our hotels. It’s also important to highlight that while HOT funding does provide for foundational items like decor pop-ups, advertising, and immersive attractions, the event is only possible through the collaborative efforts between our local businesses, universities, artists, and the City. Each contributes their time, creativity, and resources to bring this month-long experience to life.
You can learn more about how HOT funds work and how the city utalizes those funds with this short video.
