HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF DENTON HALLOWEEN

Denton Halloween draws over one million visitors and drives $19 million in sales to local businesses. You're already in the middle of it, so here's how to make sure your business gets every dollar it deserves.

  • Overview

    • It's our job to get people here; it's your job to get them in the door. Below is our list of the ways you can drive traffic to your business and increase revenue during Denton Halloween.

    Tips and Tricks

    • Decorate!

      • Visitors are coming for a Halloween experience and want to visit businesses that are themed accordingly. See the Decorating and Visibility tab for more information.

    • Set up outside your store to capture foot traffic.

      • The masses will be walking around; set up outside to meet them where they are.

    • Extend your hours into the evening.

      • Our data shows that peak foot traffic is 5 pm-10 pm.

    • Consign Halloween merchandise or make your own.

      • Last year we partnered with a local artist to sell Halloween merch on consignment. The initiative brought in nearly $100K in revenue split between the city and the artist. (Standard is 70% to the artist and 30% to the business) Collaborating with a local artist takes the work of designing off of your back while supporting a local creative. With a little self-promotion, it will also help you engage both your and the artist collective audiences.

    • Create Halloween-themed specials and promotions

      • Our food and drink page is heavily trafficked. Follow the link to learn how to get your establishment on one of our Halloween-themed food and drink tours.

    • Plan events and submit them to the calendar

      • See the Events tab for more information or visit the Events page to submit your activity.

  • Overview

    • Our research shows that most visitors come for the decorations and stay for the afterparty and events. Draw them into your store by decorating for the season. The more decorated storefronts downtown, the more reasons people have to visit, explore, and linger. Help us transform Denton by going all out.

    Decor Grant Program

    • The Downtown Denton Foundation offers a Halloween Storefront Decoration Grant Program to help local businesses transform downtown into a festive, spooky, and vibrant destination throughout the month of October. These grants are competitive and evaluated by a review committee using a standardized rubric. Selected businesses will receive funding for their Halloween decorations.

    Tips and Tricks

    • Window paintings are a fast, easy option, and Denton has plenty of creatives who offer this service.

    • Contact the Denton Halloween team about placing a city-owned décor popup outside your business.

    • Collaborate with neighboring businesses on themed décor or larger installations.

    • Denton is full of creatives who can help you develop unique, off-the-wall ideas; some may even be on your own team!

  • Overview

    • Hosting an event is one of the best ways to generate business during Halloween. In October, the event page receives over 100,000 views, so here’s how to make sure those visitors find and engage with your event.

    When filling out your application

    • Be Descriptive

      • The more detail you include, the more likely visitors will be interested in your event, and the more likely it is to appear in search engine results.

    • Include a Strong Photo

      • With more than 300 events on the calendar, visuals matter. Use an eye-catching photo that, when possible, shows participants enjoying the event. This helps people quickly understand what you’re offering as they scroll.

      • Avoid using event flyers as your main image; add event info in the description instead.

    • Use Event Filters

      • Most users browse using event-type filters, so unfiltered events often get overlooked.

      • If you’re seeking vendors, make sure to apply the “vendor opportunity” filter. This allows your event to appear on the Artist Opportunities page.

    • Extra Tips

      • Before submitting, read your listing and ask yourself: “If I saw this among hundreds of events, would I choose mine?”

      • Double-check spelling, grammar, dates, locations, and times.

    Marketing your event

    • Social Media

      • Promoting your event yourself helps you reach an audience beyond the City’s.

      • If your event is exciting and your promotional content is high-quality, the City may collaborate with you on a post, giving you access to an even larger audience.

    • Event Websites

      • In addition to the City’s event page, posting your event on Eventbrite will help you reach a wider audience.

    • In-Store Promotion

      • Invite your customers directly. Display flyers and mention your event during interactions to ensure your regulars know what’s happening.

  • Overview

    • Denton Halloween was built as a platform to drive traffic to Denton, and we do everything we can to promote our local businesses. But our reach only goes so far. Below are ways you can amplify your visibility and attract more visitors during Denton Halloween.

    Social Media

    • Post your Halloween décor, specials, and events on all of your pages.

    • Use #DentonHalloween and tag @DentonHalloween.

    • We may reshare your post if it meets our content standards and is high-quality.

    • Short videos of your space, specials, or behind-the-scenes setup perform especially well.

    • Encourage customers to tag you in their photos and repost their content.

    • Post during peak evening hours when your audience is most active.

    • Focus on high-quality visuals.

    • We’re building out the new Denton Halloween Instagram and Facebook accounts, so if you’re creating great content, we may reach out to collaborate.

    In-store and On-Site

    • Place signage where it will appear naturally in customer photos.

    • Set up outside your storefront to capture foot traffic.

    • Create a photo-worthy spot inside or outside your space; shareable décor generates free marketing.

    • Train staff to mention events, specials, and nearby activities to encourage visitors to keep exploring.
