The Scary Chairy Orchard: Denton's Most Beloved Weird Tradition Lives On

Only in Denton does a yard full of chairs become a landmark. But that's exactly what happened when neighbors Anne Pearson and Judy Smith turned an empty lot on Churchill Drive into one of the most wonderfully strange attractions in North Texas.
It started simply enough. Judy had a joke about a "chairy tree" in her backyard. Anne owned a vacant lot near Avondale Park that FEMA had designated as a floodway, putting a stop to any plans to build on it. So the two neighbors did what any self-respecting Dentonites would do: they filled it with chairs. Hundreds of them. Sourced from garage sales, curbsides, and yes, dumpsters. What grew from that empty lot was something nobody could have planned. The Chairy Orchard became a place where schools took field trips, yoga classes stretched out between the seats, and couples even held their weddings.
The Chairy Orchard ran for nearly a decade, becoming one of those only-in-Denton things that people from across North Texas made a point to visit. Then, in the summer of 2023, the "Chairy Fairies," as Pearson and Smith called themselves, made the difficult decision to close the orchard due to vandalism and the growing upkeep challenges. A Denton original had come to an end.
But Denton doesn't let good things go quietly.

The City of Denton's Parks and Recreation Department, inspired by what the Chairy Fairies had built, set out to pay tribute to their legacy through Denton Halloween. The result is the Scary Chairy Orchard, a community art installation that invites Dentonites to upcycle and redesign chairs into Halloween-themed art objects, which are then displayed in the City Hall courtyard throughout October.
The response has been nothing short of overwhelming. In its first year, over 120 chairs were dropped off, blowing every expectation out of the water. The chairs range from kid-decorated seats featuring Sully from Monsters, Inc. and Minnie Mouse to elaborate creations by local businesses and artists.
The spirit of the original orchard is alive and well in every weird, wonderful chair in that courtyard. Come see the Scary Chairy Orchard for yourself this October at City Hall.
